On June 19th 1970 (Juneteenth), the Black Panther Party held a rally on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial promoting the proposed "Revolutionary People's Constitutional Convention," to be held that September in Philadelphia. The rally also served as a call for the immediate release of the Chicago 8, of which one of the accused was Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panther Party. In that trial, Seale was infamously ordered by the judge, Julius Hoffman, to appear in court bound and gagged. Charges were later dropped.
